After six years of captivity archeologist John Hindon has escaped and is fleeing for his life in the dense rainforest of Peten, Guatemala. The mysterious icon he has stolen will have deadly consequences for him and those coming to his rescue.

His daughter Ellen, upon learning that Mayan hunters have found some of his possessions flies to a near-bye eco-tourism compound with her archeologist paramour and pilot Doctor Henry Masthead.

The hunters pass the possessions on to Father Diego, a Mayan Catholic Priest who in turn releases them to his renowned scientist friend Doctor Jonathan Ravolie. Ellen meets with Doctor Ravolie and tearfully identifies her fathers’ personal items except for the mysterious Mayan icon that is similar to the one still in her father’s den in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Ellen has it shipped to Ravolie’s long time colleague, Professor Ramon Razon in Guatemala City.

Both scientists conclude that it is the mate of Ix Tec an ancient Mayan shaman with mysterious powers, who was first discovered in a tragic 1865 expedition in the nearby
forbidden area now named Naj Tunich - The Cave.

Two fugitives from justice, Nomad and Raul, arrive at the compound under the guise of vacationing lumberjacks. Army Colonel Roland Sandoval is pursuing them. They escape by surreptitiously stealing Ix Tec and by joining the expedition to find Ellen’s father.

Father Diego leads them to the hunter’s Mayan village of La Madre where the hunters agree to guide them to the site where John Hindon mysteriously disappeared leaving behind his clothes and possessions. Finding his personal log Ellen believes he has taken refuge in a nearby forbidden cave, nestled below a smooth flattop mountain made of jade.

Colonel Sandoval alerts Doctor Masthead, who has remained behind in case of any emergencies, that Nomad and Raul are murderers.

Masthead flies to Guatemala City to enlist the aide of Doctor Razon just as the mate icon arrives from Santa Fe. They store the icon in Masthead’s plane and head for Naj Tunich to warn their friends of the two bandits.

While searching for Ellen’s father deep inside the cave the group serendipitously discovers a secret room housing riches beyond imagination. Their moments of boundless excitement fade into reality in that none of it rightly belongs to them. Not so the two bandits who brandish their weapons, and are surprisingly joined by one of the scientists. They kill one of the Mayan guides, entomb the party inside the cave with dynamite, and make their escape only to be thwarted by Colonel Sandoval. An earthquake frees the trapped members of the expedition. They escape to the top of the mesa and Doctor Masthead’s where they hurriedly shed all essentials in order to lighten the plane including Ix Tec’s mate.

Ix Tec and his mate Cena, complete their fatal revenge on the bandits and the renegade scientist as the victims watch the slow excruciating painful disappearance of their bodies until their screams become mute.

The mountain rumbles as it reclaims all of its scattered treasure. The two icons, wide-eyed and facing each other, join the mountain with its mysterious cave, and disappear beneath the earth.

Colonel Sandoval is rescued by the only remaining soldier.

Ellen finds closure believing that her father, along with others on this deadly expedition, has suffered the same wrath by Ix Tec and she will never see him again. She now has a new goal in life, wife of Doctor Henry Masthead.
